CONCEPTUAL ART AND CONCEPT ART. FROM WORD TO BITMAP.

If conceptual art is based on the thought and on the plan of the work even before its visual and aesthetic aims, concept art concerns the concept artist’s or the concept designer’s job, whose products refer also to characters and objects relative to videogames, even besides works that could never be realized. In conceptual art the artist abolishes the representation of reality while replacing it with the thought; in concept art the artist is considered a good and prepared one as much as he succeeds in joining together a gift for drawing and an extraordinary realistic interpretation capacity. In both cases the idea transcends the realization even starting from different ideal assumptions and ending in creative solutions of opposite visual-visionary valence. The first one strips itself of images in order to affirm the importance of the plan and of the idea, the second one disguises itself by making use of images with a baroque greediness in order to affirm its enjoyment in its ephemeral virtual landscape, subject to a probable not material life too.
Games designer’s and concept artist’s works and personal works live above all in the memory of their hard-disk, they face the world of blogs and of individual sites. Thousands of ‘tables’, sketchs, sceneries, visions and characters bring with them the imagination and the vitality of their own creator and they don’t arrive forcedly to the one who enjoys this art, but being part of the gameplay of a game.
Another aspect becomes crucial in this context: the solid interpretation of the virtual work and its material transposition, so that from its world it can converse with a current world not yet ready to receive its fluctuating presence, as science fiction anticipated (but in reality our technological house of the future foresees it) in ‘Total recall’ sceneries.
In the instant in which the concept artist’s work comes out of the screen and it becomes tangible material, changing from the state of translucent material to the opaque material one, the personal work -personal piece- must be distinguished from commissions bound to videogames production, from tutorial and demo. The selection operated goes beyond the working-productive moment in order to enter the personal environment of the author and to identify its inspiring and creative processes. In this sense the works are supported by traditional materials in order to be read even by either those who don’t make use of technological aids or those who are not used to play. Here they are, translated on picture, on aluminium, on wood, on crystal, in order to approach a language known by everyone and above all in order to subtract them from an intrinsic ephemeral aspect bound to programs and make them readable in the traditional forms.
The purpose is not to pervert the nature of the original medium, but to spread it through a nature conceivable for everyone. The life dimension of the program and of the screen remains irreplaceable in order to read both the artist’s ability and the technological application in the era of its artistic manual abilityAnyhow, right because they are soaked in a strong aesthetic component, the charm acquired by the works is so great because they are fixed and frozen in a passing dimension, in accordance with the traditional reading of art, or better still of painting.
The part relative to materials is as important as the other one, in the technological aspect of the work. Photographic papers guaranteed nowadays for 200 years are produced: when the software which let the works production will be obsolete these pictures will still be readable, as much as a Nadar slab today.
